The Mission:

Jodi says, “I need to find something on the internet and since you are the internet queen I thought you could help me and maybe help others through your blog! I want to stop using plastic bags in the grocery store and trying to find cute and cheap reusable bags. I really don’t want to get a Trader Joe’s or Publix bags (even though they are $.99) because, and you may laugh, if I am at Kroger it would be weird to have a Publix bag! My husband makes fun of me for this, so feel free…”

The Solution:

Jodi, I wouldn’t dream of making fun of you! And, kudos to you for doing your part to help our planet…some of my personal favorites are not as affordable as your $.99 Publix bag, but they are much more fun and most of them fit in a small pouch so you can keep them in your purse or car…

I really love the bags from Envirosax…they have a great selection and are very lightweight.

Another favorite is Baggu…I love their site – you can mix and match your bag color choices…

Reisenthel bags have nice long straps and cute floral designs…or, solid colors if you your husband would prefer something more simple…

Or, if monograms are your thing, check out the totes from Garnet Hill

Final Plea from The Ferret:

For those of you who are not ready to take the plunge like Jodi did, please consider recycling your plastic bags – check here for drop off locations in your state.

The average family brings home 1,000 bags every year. Most of those bags end up in land fills. That really adds up – 100 billion plastic bags are sent to landfill in the US each year. In landfills, it can take up to 1000 years for a bag to decompose. Plastics don’t biodegrade, they photo-degrade, breaking down into tiny toxic pieces that contaminate soil and water or harm wildlife.

And, as an aside…paper bags aren’t so great either…there are pros and cons for plastic vs. paper (i.e. paper bags can be made from recycled paper, but plastic bags can be recycled into composite lumber as well as other things)…so, just buy your own cool bags and convince your friends to do the same…
